Be Stroke Aware in Shoalhaven – Know the Signs, Act F.A.S.T is a community health program delivered by Stroke Foundation and supported by the NSW Government. The program aims to improve stroke awareness, recognition and response across the Shoalhaven LGA by providing education, resources, and community engagement activities.

Overall purpose of the program
Be Stroke Aware in Shoalhaven – Know the Signs, Act F.A.S.T is a community health program delivered by Stroke Foundation and supported by the NSW Government. The program aims to improve stroke awareness, recognition and response across the Shoalhaven LGA by providing education, resources, and community engagement activities.
The initiative forms part of Stroke Foundation’s national StrokeSafe Community Engagement Program, which focuses on increasing equitable access to stroke prevention and awareness information. Through a combination of formal presentations, community outreach, events and resource distribution, the program seeks to strengthen community understanding of the F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) signs of stroke and promote timely action, including calling triple zero (000) and undertaking regular blood pressure checks.
Overall purpose of the position
The Community Engagement Program Volunteers are central to the success of this program. They help share stroke awareness messages and connect directly with community members across the Shoalhaven LGA.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Deliver StrokeSafe talks (online and in‑person) within the Shoalhaven LGA as required (may involve weeknight and weekend commitments).
- Share approved Stroke Foundation messages clearly and accurately.
- Distribute Stroke Foundation resources at talks and events.
- Support community engagement activities, including:
- Staffing information stalls at events
- Setting up and packing down information tables
- Speaking with community members and answering general questions
- Assist with letterbox drops to raise stroke awareness.
- Support other community outreach as needed.
- Submit reimbursement claims on time, with required receipts.
- Let the Community Engagement Coordinator know if your availability changes or if any issues arise.
Your background, skills and experience
- Excellent verbal communication skills, with the ability to deliver clear information to diverse audiences. Public speaking experience is highly regarded.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, PowerPoint, Outlook) and other common software
- Confident using Microsoft Teams for virtual meetings and online StrokeSafe talks, including basic troubleshooting.
- Willingness to learn StrokeSafe Community Engagement Program content and present only approved information.
- Access to a car (travel reimbursement available) and willingness to travel within Shoalhaven LGA is highly desirable.
- Ability to work respectfully with others, recognising and valuing diverse perspectives.
- Enthusiastic, confident and positive approach to community engagement.
- Punctual, reliable and well presented.
